La Uva Artist Statement

Cultural ancestral background, family and community are the main inspirations for my creativity. Painting is my lifestyle and nothing else can fill in the emptiness inside me. It is amazing how painting can have a powerful impact on people's ways of thinking. Incorporating Mesoamerican figurative art into my paintings is a way that brings me closer to my ancestors. I understand that everybody's observations are different and I do not expect people to fully admire my paintings. When it comes to my paintings I do not allow people to control the direction of my creativity. I value an honest critique or suggestions because it makes me more open minded. I paint for my own personal motives. Worrying about what others may think will only cause me to lose my authenticity. The biggest challenge and the most rewarding experience I have encountered as a painter is overcoming my imperfections and dealing with emotions. My life is no different from anyone else, because we all experience feelings of happiness or sadness. As a painter I chase these feelings; they are the essence of my creations.

The subject of my work is creating a spiritual path to my mythical homeland. Aztlan is the home my ancestors once lived on. I do not overtly cover social issues in my artwork but it is motivated by reclaiming my ancestral land. Today I stand with many minorities and people of color striving for power and freedom from oppression and discrimination. I strive to exceed as a productive member of the community and gain spiritual growth for each painting I accomplish. Taking risks and spending all the time necessary is what painting requires. I will certainly direct my concentration to painting in order for me to keep growing.
